what is Chinoiserie?

The word Chinoiserie is derived from the French word “chinois” which means “Chinese” or “after the Chinese taste”. Chinoiserie did not originate in Asia, it’s a European interpretation of East Asian design.

Although they knew little about Asia, the Europeans developed a great respect for the East Asian artistic traditions. They were intrigued by the “exotic” culture and began creating their own versions of East Asian designs blended with the highly ornamental rococo style. The result was beautiful chinoiserie designs depicting bold, whimsical nature and lush garden scenes with pavilions, birds, and rambling floral motifs, this style soon began to grace the walls of royal palaces and stately homes.

As trade with Asia flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries, the chinoiserie style soared in popularity and is still a sought after interiors.

MY STORY

I only recently discovered and fell in love with Chinoiserie. As a lover of flora and fauna with an interest in home interiors this style featuring bold whimsical bird and botanical scenes was a match made in heaven for me. Blending both European and East Asian styles it was a popular design for wallpapers and screens and began gracing the walls of stately homes and palaces from the 17th century

I travelled to San Francisco in 2019 to attend a short course in Flowering Chinoiserie, learning valuable painting techniques which set me on a path discovering this beautiful style in my home studio, my goal is to now share the magic of chinoiserie with others.

MY STUDIO

I work from a small home studio in Waimauku, Auckland surrounded by botanical inspiration.
